Why is this important?

Unlike most other consumer products, wine is strictly regulated and cannot be shipped to consumers in every US state. Some states allow unrestricted shipments to consumers, some allow shipments with certain volume or frequency limitations, and some prohibit direct shipments altogether. Because of this complicated state of affairs, we've found that it helps to ask up front for the state you'll be shipping to. This will help ensure that you avoid wasting time looking for products you can't have shipped to you.

Reciprocity and Delivery Times

In "reciprocal" states (states that permit direct shipment of alcoholic products from out-of-state producers or licensed retailers, provided that the necessary permits are filed and the required taxes are paid), delivery is usually accomplished within 2 - 5 business days. In other states, however, direct shipment is not permitted ("non-reciprocal" states), and product must pass through a licensed wholesaler and retailer before it can be sold-or shipped-to a customer. Because bulk shipments of 800wine's winery sampler and wine shop products are currently sent out only twice a month from California, the delivery time depends on when the order is received in relation to the bulk shipment to the specific state. If the order is received just before a bulk shipment is sent out, it could arrive as soon as 8 or 9 days after the order is placed. In the worst case, however, if the order is received the same day of the bulk shipment, then it will not be sent out until the next bulk shipment (generally 2 - 3 weeks afterwards), so final delivery could take as long as 25 business days.
